There have been a few recent advances made by the movement here in Brisbane. Most significantly was a meeting of the International Workers of the World at the Black and Green Bookshop last Sunday. Previously, membership to the IWW was low and disorganised. Ten people attended, three of whom were Wobblies, to discuss the possibility of turning the IWW into a political force in Queensland.
Comrade's experiences and ways to organise in their workplaces, experiences in other activist organisations, possibilities for a new IWW and the corruption of the ALP controlled trade union were among the various topics that the meeting touched upon.
While no new members were signed up on Sunday, all expressed a strong interest in membership and another meeting has been organised prior to the celebration of Wobbly culture at Zapata's Bookshop/Ahimsa House on the 16th (see my post on the Events/Announcements section). There have been a number of attempts to revitalise the Queensland branch of the IWW for a number of years, but there is a strong sense that those currently becoming involved have between them the skills, experience, commitment and energy to make this project work.
The same day, anarchists held a Really Free Market, which was a real success. I scored some Bon Jovi records!
